Installing your printer for the first time on a Mac running OS X v10.10 Yosemite, OS X v10.9 or OS X v10.8 Mavericks Mountain Lion, AirPrint is a standard method to install and create a printer queue for your printer. HP Printer Driver Update is available through the Apple Software Update (ASU) that can be switched from AirPrint to HP printer drivers. ASU automatically download the software. For AirPrint, the printer must already be set on a wireless network.
What are the functions available with AirPrint-enabled printers
With Mountain Lion and Mavericks, adds AirPrint-enabled printer is fast and easy way to use the printer without installing drivers. AirPrint provides basic functions for the printer connected to the (Ethernet) or wireless network cables. AirPrint is not available if the printer is connected to a Mac, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule with a USB cable.
Try to connect the printer to a wireless network with WPS method first. If the printer is connected to a wired (Ethernet) or wireless methods, choose a different method.
Method 1: Connect the printer to a wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
Step One: Prepare for installation- Make sure that your network is already set up: Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the wireless network.
- Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
- Exit all applications running on your computer.
- Turn off the Wireless setting. If the Wireless light is on, press the Wireless button on the printer control panel to turn off Wireless.
Step two: Connect to the wireless network
Select the option that you want to use to connect your printer to the wireless network, and then follow the instructions.
Option one: Connect to the wireless network using WPS
If your wireless router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), this is the simplest way to set up the printer on a wireless network.
Note:
This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router to connect to the printer.
Press the WPS button on your wireless router.
On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button . The wireless light starts to blink.
Wait up to two minutes while the printer establishes a network connection with the wireless router.
Note:
If the WiFi-Protected Setup (WPS) method is not successful, try another connection method.
Option two: Connect to the wireless network using an Apple Extreme Router
Follow these steps to install the printer using the Wireless Client Setup Assistant in Airport Utility v 5.6.
Note:
Airport Utility v 5.6 is the last version that supports the Wireless Client Setup Assistant. If you have a newer version, choose a different method to connect your printer to a wireless network.
- From the Dock, click Finder.
- Click Applications, click Utilities, and then click Airport Utility.
- On the right panel, verify that the Airport Utility is version 5.6 or earlier.
- Double-click Airport Utility, and then click Manual Setup.
- On the menu bar, click Base Station, and then click Add Wireless Clients....
- Click First Attempt, and then click Continue.
- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button . The Wireless lights starts to blink.
- Wait up to two minutes while the printer establishes a network connection with the wireless router. Once the printer connects to the router, the printer name appears in the Wireless Client Setup Assistant window. Click Done.
Method 2: Connect the printer to a wireless network using AirPrint
Follow these steps to add an AirPrint printer in Mountain Lion or Mavericks.Note:
Some printers might require a firmware update to enable AirPrint compatibility, depending on the model and purchase date. HP always recommends updating to the latest firmware version for the best performance and functionality.
- Turn on the printer, and make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
- Make sure that the printer is connected to the wireless or wired (Ethernet) network.
- Click the Apple menu , and then click System Preferences.
- Click Print & Scan.
- Click the plus sign at the bottom of the left pane.
- Under Nearby Printers, click the name of your printer.
- Click the Use box, and then select AirPrint from the pop-up menu if it is not selected already.

- Click Add to add the printer to the queue.
Method 3: Wireless setup using a USB connection
Using a USB cable to transfer network settings is an easy way to set up the wireless connection. Follow these steps to install the software using a USB connection, and then connect the printer to the wireless network. Once the printer is connected to the wireless network, you can remove the USB connected printer from your printer list, and then add the wireless connected printer to the list.Step 1: Update your Mac with Apple Software Update
Important:
Before you install your printer, run Software Update to make sure that the database your Mac uses to find available printer software is current.
- Click the Apple menu , and then click About This Mac.
- Click Software Updates....
- Click the Updates icon .
- From the menu, click Store .
- Click Reload Page to refresh the update list.
- If no updates are available, your Mac has the latest software and database installed. Skip to the next step to install the printer.
- Click Install to complete any updates.
Step 2: Install the printer
- Turn on your printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
- Connect the USB cable to the printer and to the Mac. A print queue is automatically created for your printer, and the printer software automatically installs on your computer. If the Mac already has current software for your printer, the print queue is created in the background.
- Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
- Click Print & Scan, and then make sure that your printer is in the list of available devices.
- If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign at the bottom of the left pane, click the name of your USB printer, and then click Add.
Note:
Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
Step 3: Connect the printer to the wireless network
After completing the USB installation, follow these steps to connect to a wireless network.You can view a video demonstration to learn how to set up a wireless connection, or follow the written steps.
- Click the Apple icon , and then click System Preferences.
- Click Print & Scan.
- Click Open Print Queue, and then click Printer Setup.
- Click the Utility tab, and then click Open Printer Utility.
- Click HTMLConfig.
- Click the Networking tab, and then click Wireless from the list on the left.
- Under Communication Mode, click Infrastructure, select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the << button.
- From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication, click WEP or WPA/WPA2. Your selection depends on the wireless security protocol your network uses.
- your network does not have wireless security, leave the Security Mode set to Open System (No Authentication).
- Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key in the appropriate field, and then click Apply.
- In the confirmation box, click OK, and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
Step 4: Delete the USB connected printer, and then add the wireless connected printer
- In the Print & Scan window under Printers, click your printer name, and then click the Minus sign to remove it.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer.
- Under Printers, click the Plus sign .
- Select your printer name with Bonjour as the Kind, and then click Add.
